Linking carbon credits to nature outcomes.

CarbonPlus™ is an innovative, science-backed label that enhances verified carbon abatement projects with measurable and independently certified nature impact – such as biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, and nature repair.

It's not a carbon credit itself, but a value-added feature that links to carbon units like Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), helping project developers, investors, and buyers clearly identify projects that deliver measured environmental outcomes alongside carbon abatement.

CarbonPlus is currently being delivered as a pilot program to test and refine the approach for nature measurement outcomes with carbon projects. The program is administered by Accounting for Nature during this pilot phase.

Program Guide

A practical summary of how CarbonPlus works, including key features, eligibility requirements, how to apply the label to carbon projects, and the benefits for different stakeholders. The guide helps users understand the step-by-step process of participating in CarbonPlus.

CarbonPlus Application

The CarbonPlus Linking Application Form is now available to view. The form provides guidance on how to apply to link carbon projects to Certified Environmental Asset Accounts using the Accounting for Nature® Framework. We will begin accepting applications from 11 August 2025.

Carbon Linking Rules

These rules, which are held by Accounting for Nature, outline the criteria and process for linking Certified Environmental Asset Accounts to eligible carbon projects under CarbonPlus. They define the requirements for demonstrating verified nature outcomes alongside carbon abatement, ensuring consistency, transparency, and scientific integrity across all CarbonPlus labelled units.

How it works.

CarbonPlus is built on the foundation of carbon unit issuance and goes beyond emissions reduction to account for environmental asset condition. Here’s how it works:

  • Projects capture, store or avoid carbon emissions through verified methods, such as reforestation, regenerative agriculture, and ecosystem restoration.

  • Unlike standard carbon units, CarbonPlus also quantifies the condition of environmental assets within the carbon project area, such as forests, fauna and soil, and monitors the change in condition over time by applying the Accounting for Nature® Framework.

  • Each Accounting for Nature® Certified Environmental Asset Account undergoes rigorous assessment using scientific methodologies recommended for accreditation under the Accounting for Nature® Framework by independent leading scientists to ensure credibility and transparency.

  • Once an Environmental Asset Account has been certified by Accounting for Nature following an independent audit and in alignment with the Carbon Linking Rules, it can be linked to ACCUs to create CarbonPlus labelled units.

These units are issued, providing added confidence in the outcomes achieved by the carbon project through evidence of both carbon abatement and enhanced environmental transparency.

  • Businesses, landholders, and investors can use CarbonPlus labelled units to meet sustainability targets, report on nature-related impacts, or trade in compliance or voluntary markets.

Where is CarbonPlus available?

Currently supporting the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) Scheme.

Right now, CarbonPlus is designed for carbon projects registered under the ACCU Scheme. This means it’s available for carbon projects that generate ACCUs through the Clean Energy Regulator’s approved methods and in accordance with the Carbon Linking Rules set by Accounting for Nature.

By using CarbonPlus, carbon project developers can go beyond abatement by measuring and showcasing their project’s nature impacts—adding an extra layer of transparency, credibility and market value.

Nxt.Registry

The Nxt.Registry is the secure digital platform that powers CarbonPlus. It plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, traceability, and integrity across every CarbonPlus labelled unit issued.

Through the Nxt.Registry, CarbonPlus labelled units are created by linking carbon credits (ACCUs) issued in the Australian National Registry of Emissions Units (ANREU) to Certified Environmental Asset Accounts. This connection provides a secure link and verifies the data connection for the nature measurements of a carbon project, all independently certified under the Accounting for Nature® Framework.

PILOT PROGRAM & ADMINISTRATION

CarbonPlus content and documents have been prepared by Accounting for Nature Ltd (ACN 25 629 446 4934) and NatureCert Pty Ltd (ABN 63 655 561 863) trading as Nxt.Nature, the issuer of CarbonPlus labelled units. Accounting for Nature Ltd (ACN 629 446 493) is currently acting as the administrator of CarbonPlus, during an interim testing phase. This arrangement is temporary and designed to support program establishment while maintaining a clear separation of roles to manage potential conflicts of interest. Following this initial period, the administration of CarbonPlus, and the Nxt.Registry where CarbonPlus labelled units will be recorded, will be licensed to Nxt.Nature.
